  15. BACKGROUND:

  18. This program, first released in 1990, has been updated
  19. quarterly each calendar quarter since then.  It was written,
  20. and is researched and updated on a weekly basis by Michael D.
  21. Jenkins, CPA and attorney, with a new version released each
  22. calendar quarter.  In addition to providing constantly
  23. updated tax, business, and legal information for small
  24. businesses, the program itself is under almost constant
  25. revision and expansion, to make it ever-easier to use and
  26. more useful to you, the small business owner or adviser.

  28. Mr. Jenkins, a graduate of the Harvard Law School, formerly
  29. was a tax attorney with a large San Francisco law firm
  30. noted for its expertise in venture capital matters.
  31.  
  32. Mr. Jenkins is also a Certified Public Accountant, and
  33. practiced for over 4 years as a tax CPA with two of the
  34. "Big Six" international accounting firms, in Los Angeles
  35. and Honolulu, as well as being a manager and later a tax
  36. partner for several years with a large local CPA firm in
  37. the San Francisco area.  He also spent several years
  38. practicing as an economics and business consultant in L.A.
  39. and Washington, D.C., with the consulting firm and private
  40. "think tank," Economics Research Associates.  At present,
  41. he authors a series of business "how-to" books and runs a
  42. small software company, Ronin Software, which publishes this
  43. program and another shareware program, the financial
  44. takeover game/simulation, "Wall $treet Raider."

  46. This program has received very favorable reviews in PC WORLD
  47. Magazine in a 1993 cover article that selected it as one of
  48. only 24 "instant payback" software programs, that would more
  49. than pay for themselves almost immediately.  It was again
  50. chosen and reviewed very favorably in a 1994 PC WORLD cover
  51. article that selected Small Business Advisor as one of "the
  52. best of business shareware" programs.  More recently, it
  53. received rave reviews ("...superb all-in-one information
  54. source...") in a full-page article in the March, 1995 issue
  55. of The COMPUTER SHOPPER.

  61. Mr. Jenkins is the principal author of the book "STARTING
  62. AND OPERATING A BUSINESS IN @STATE."

  64. He is also author or coauthor of 50 other similarly-titled
  65. books, one for each of the states (plus the District of
  66. Columbia), all of which are published by Oasis Press (a
  67. division of PSI Research, of Grants Pass, Oregon -- a
  68. leading publisher of business books and software).

  70. Most of these 275-to-300-page how-to manuals are partially
  71. coauthored by local experts in the respective states (the
  72. local offices of the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, in
  73. some 30 states), and together have sold nearly a million
  74. copies nationwide since the initial book in the series,
  75. "STARTING AND OPERATING A BUSINESS IN CALIFORNIA" (now in
  76. its 14th annual edition) first appeared in 1981.

  79. by INC. MAGAZINE as one of the 6 "winners," out of all the
  80. hundreds of small business books INC. reviewed, in a cover
  81. article entitled, "IN SEARCH OF THE SMALL BUSINESS BIBLE."
  82. A subsequent review in the NATIONAL PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT (Sept.
  83. 1994 issue) said that the Starting & Operating a Business
  84. series of books is:  "...probably THE MOST USEFUL small
  85. business self-help book available on the market...."

  88. noted recently that our Georgia book edition was the number
  89. 1 selling small business book in Atlanta, in a monthly
  90. listing provided by the Barnes & Noble bookstore chain.
